Everyone's band tells them what to do next. Merit Vale's only tells her afterwards. In Victory Plaza, a challenger fights a door that will not open. Seven seconds later, the giant screen shows him walking calmly through the other one. The crowd cheers harder. Only Tad, Merit's twelve-year-old neighbor, says it out loud: "Why are they cheering?" The LEDGER, the city's AI, predicts everyone's moves. The Feed deletes its mistakes. Within minutes the neighbors have reported Tad. His band reads PENDING ACTION: RECALIBRATION. Merit has spent sixteen years hiding her late band. Now she walks Tad to the registration booth and puts her own name down as his Challenger in the televised Audit. Before each trial, the LEDGER seals a prediction of Merit's next move. Every guess the LEDGER gets right, Tad loses something, starting with everything he owns. Back out, and they take him that night. Lose, and he is Recalibrated. The whole city trusts the machine more than its own eyes. Merit is about to bet a twelve-year-old boy on her only edge: she moves before her band speaks.
